American, mid-19th century. An exceptionally scarce hand-colored lithograph entitled Cincinnati, Covington & Newport, published by Smith Brothers & Co. of New York, drawn by J.W. Hill after D.W. Moody, depicting Cincinnati from Mt. Adams with Newport and Covington visible across the river and the Pyro Garden featured prominently in the foreground. Matted and framed; plate 24.5 x 40 in., frame 34.75 x 48.5 in.
The colors of the print are still quite vibrant. In spite of the mount around it, the title was not cut off and later reattached, the sheet is all in one piece. However, it was laid down (glued) on the cardboard mount, and there are multiple losses to upper and lower right corners, as well as one loss towards the lower right corner in the bottom margin. There are multiple tears in the margins, one affecting the plate towards the center right (3.25 in. long, 1.5 in. within plate). There are also multiple stains and scratches (possibly old tears stabilized when the print was laid down) on the plate, mostly located in the sky, and pencil inscriptions in the margins. Finally, there are significant areas of glue residue in the margins.
