A Correct Map of the Seat of War in Mexico. Being a Copy of Genl. Arista's map, taken at Resaca de la Palma with additions and Corrections; Embellished with Diagrams of the Battles of 8th & 9th May, and Capture of Monterey, with a memorandum of forces engaged, results, &c. and Plan of Vera Cruz and Castle of San Juan de Ulua. New York: J. Disturnell, 1847. Print area approx. 19 x 24 in. Mexican states hand-outlined in different colors. Facsimile signature of designer J.G. Bruff lower center. Top with eagle on US shield, holding a Table of Distances. Central left has a wonderful image of a US dragoon charging at a cannon, riding over bodies on the ground.
Jose Mariano Martin Buenaventura Ignacio Nepomuceno Garcia de Arista Nuez (1802-1855) was sent to expel American troops from Mexican territory in Texas, igniting the Mexican-American War. He was in command of Mexican troops at the Battles of Palo Alto and Resaca de la Palma, after which he was recalled. He became President of Mexico in 1851 until 1853. It is thought that much of his ineffectiveness was because of political divisions in his staff - both civilian and military.
Condition
Light toning. A few professionally repaired tears, especially at lower margin and right side. A bit of foxing upper left.
Presently in working order, with a rich sound with tremendous acoustics. There are some small areas of surface wear to the finish on the case and lid.
