- Lot Description
Worsted wool, approx. 71 x 139 in., with 33 hand-sewn, single-applique cotton stars configured in slightly scattered vertical rows of 5/5/5/6/6/6. The fly is constructed of 13 hand-sewn stripes. Red, white, and blue wool fringe applied along three edges. Hoist end is cotton with three whip-stitched eyelets. Representing Oregon's admission to the Union. Ca 1859-1861.
Bottom edge of hoist identified to "W.B. Mack, Cedar Rapids, Iowa." Walter B. Mack (1832-1879) was an early Cedar Rapids settler and grocer who was aboard the Steamboat Cedar Rapids when it docked in the town of the same name in 1858. Mack is listed in the 1911 County History of Linn County, Iowa.
Loss to fringe along top edge (near right corner) as well as right edge. Scattered holes throughout.Condition
