Printed broadside, 11.25 x 16.25 in., framed, 13.75 x 19.5 in. Select Battalion of Sharpshooters Authorized by the War Department! Augusta, ME: September 26, 1864. Authority was given to Captain Jacob McClure, late Commander of Co., D, US Sharpshooters, to raise four Companies of Maine Sharpshooters, and this broadside "presents a rare opportunity for good shots to volunteer and receive the Highest Bounties." Signed in type by Adjutant General John L. Hodsdon.
The 1st Battalion Maine Sharpshooters was first organized in Augusta, ME, from October 27 through December 29, 1864. The companies served at several locations on the front, but all appeared at Petersburg to fight together. It disbanded after its members transferred to the 29th Maine Infantry. The regiment lost a total of 19 men; seven being mortally wounded and twelve dying of disease.

Folds in broadside, with some partial separation at folds. Period inscription inked on back, with some burning of ink creating few small holes along left edge, not impacting broadside's text.
