- Lot Description
A pair of black leather box doctor's saddle bags with connecting band, edges tooled in a serpentine pattern and the flaps embossed "ELLIOT'S PATENT / GRANTED JAN. 18, 1870 / A.A. MELLIER / ST. LOUIS, MO. / SOLE PROPRIETOR" in an oval. The interior of each bag is divided into two tin-lined compartments, three with wooden bottle holders, the bottom halves folding out. Complete with 20 large, 10 medium and 4 small medicine bottles, most retaining their stoppers and hand-inscribed paper contents label. A stack of original powder envelopes are also included. An 1878 publication identifies Mellier as the manufacturer of both medicines and this model of saddle bag.
