- Lot Description
.50-70 caliber, 36" barrel, two-leaf musket rear barrel sight, Springfield marked lockplate. Two barrel bands with a walnut stock.
Consignor related the following oral history supplied by a family descendant, specifically, that the Springfield had once belonged to Civil War veteran Samuel D. McElroy of Ohio, a former soldier and prison guard at the Ohio State Penitentiary. Research shows a Private Samuel D. McElroy of Northfield, Ohio who was promoted to Lieutenant with service in both Company B. & I., 128th Ohio Infantry. The 128th OVI supplied the prison guard at Johnson's Island before mustering out in July 1865. Post-war 1870 and 1880 census records indicate that Samuel D. McElroy (1835-1925) worked the land as a farmer. As the Allin conversion was not issued during the Civil War, we speculate that perhaps the factual wartime prison guard service morphed into the Penitentiary recollection. We were unable to document the type of weapons used at the Ohio State Penitentiary in the later 19th century.
Barrel and lock with an attic untouched brown patina. Stock with some nicks and dings. Two-band 1866 Springfield's are quite rare and seldom seen. Total produced 1,146 short rifles.Condition
