Printed broadside, 8 x 13.75 in. The Trials and Executions of the Six Malefactors who was executed this Morning in the Old Bailey. "Penny" broadside advertising the public hanging of accused criminals. England, August 22, 1814. Featuring a woodcut illustration at top depicting the six criminals hanging from the gallows.
Most of the individuals sent to the gallows were young, male thieves who stole various goods. Although it seems gruesome, people considered public executions entertainment before 1850. During the first half of the 19th century, printers in England delivered the news of local murders and executions to the masses through "half-penny" and "penny" broadsides such as this, often containing biographical information on the individuals and details relative to their trial and execution. Sometimes, the broadsides even included the criminal's last words.
Toning of the paper with some wrinkling, laid on paper.
