Inquisition in (?) and labor at the dwelling plantation of Basil Beale in Frederick County on the third day of June in the year of our Lord seventeen hundred and ninety two by me, William Beatty one of the coroners in and for said county duly commissioned and qualified upon view of the body of a Negroe woman named Ruth age near or about forty years in possession of him the said Basil Beal then and there lying dead upon the oath of [Names of all members of the inquest jury, also listed at the bottom of the document] good and lawful Men of the county aforesaid who being duly summoned sworn and charged to inquire when, where, and in what manner the said Negro woman Ruth came to her death do say that the said Negro Ruth being for a considerable time past accustomed to trouble with fits did in the night proceeding the day of date hereof while in the act of washing of clothes at a branch near the dwelling house of the said Basil Beale on the plantation aforesaid by fits aforesaid tumble into the said branch wherefor want of timely assistance she drowned. And so the jurors aforesaid upon their oath aforesaid do say that the said Ruth the Negro woman forsaid by drowning in the manner aforesaid came to her death and not otherwise. It is not clear from the document what triggered the inquest, but Mr. Beale may himself have wanted to be sure that someone else had not murdered Ruth, since that would have been major destruction of his property (as slaves were viewed at the time).
