Cotton, 4 x 7.75 in., printed flag with 13 stars configured in wreath pattern. Inscription printed in selvage reads: Souvenir from the Betsy Ross House/ Birthplace of Old Glory Philadelphia (Stamped) Apr 25, 1910. Ca 1910.
The legend of Betsy Ross took root in the hearts of Americans thanks to the efforts of her grandson William Canby. In March 1870, based on his own recollections as a child and those of other relatives, Canby made public the story of a meeting between his grandmother and a Congressional committee comprised of George Washington, Robert Morris, and George Ross, that supposedly resulted in the creation of the first American flag. A Philadelphia seamstress, Betsy made flags during the American Revolution, but there is no documentary evidence that she sewed the first stars and stripes.
This flag with its familiar oval wreath stars came to be known as the Betsy Ross flag and remains one of America's most cherished art forms and sacred national icons.
