DESCRIPTION: William Trost Richards (American, 1833-1905). Watercolor. Landscape overlooking a stream towards mountains. Signed in the lower right corner. Catalog number on label verso suggests where it was shown or exhibited. Under white matting in gold painted wooden frame. An important Philadelphia artist, Richards studied in Florence, Rome, and Paris before settling in Germantown, Pennsylvania. He was recognized initially for his landscapes - especially of the White Mountains of northern New Hampshire and southwestern Maine - and painted a number of scenes in the Susquehanna Valley. Richards was a member of the American Watercolor Society and an honorary member of the National Academy of Design, where he exhibited from 1861 to 1899. MEASUREMENTS: 9-1/4" x 14-1/4". Overall with frame 17-3/4" x 22-1/2". CONDITION: Light toning to watercolor. Marks to matting under glass. Scratches, dings, and wear to frame.
