DESCRIPTION: James Abbott McNeill Whistler (American, 1834-1903). Etching on laid paper. Little Putney. Trimmed to image. Butterfly monogram at lower left, additional mark in etching. Watermark to paper. Matted under cream matting in gold painted wooden frame. Born in Lowell, Massachusetts, Whistler is one of the most influential late 19th-century American painters and etchers, although he lived primarily in England. He worked in a wide variety of styles including Impressionism, Symbolism, and Art Nouveau. He studied in Paris with Charles Gleyre and became a part of avant-garde circles that included Henri Fantin-Latour, Alphonse Legros, Edouard Manet, Gustave Courbet, and Edgar Degas. He settled in England in 1859 where he lived for the remainder of his life. MEASUREMENTS: Image 5-1/4" x 8-1/4". Overall with frame 12-1/4" x 15-1/4". CONDITION: Undulation to paper under glass, is not mounted flat. Light toning and foxing to paper, rough edges from trimming. Light wear to matting, some dark spots and a rubbed mark in the upper left corner. Light wear to frame, chipping and cracking to surface with chips to edges.
