DESCRIPTION: Continental carved ivory fan. Each guardstick is carved with a ribbon and floral motif of roses, lilies, daises, and leaves, which surrounds the fan, when closed, as the design is carved into the sides of the ribbing. With a handle attached to the head. PROVENANCE: Per the consignor, this fan was presented to Amelia Brereton, Deaconess of the Episcopal Church, by the Viceroy of India. Amelia was a native of Franklin County and was born and raised in the family home, 124 Fifth Avenue, Chambersburg. Family paperwork with the fan noted that it was hand carved from an ivory elephant tusk around about 1600. MEASUREMENTS: 9-1/4" long. CONDITION: Most of ribbon missing, some still attached to ribbing. Light warping to parts of ribbing. Red marks under top rose on one guardstick.
