DESCRIPTION: Federal silhouettes from the prominent Kelker family of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Three silhouettes on paper, of a mother, father, and child based on the portraits by Jacob Eichholtz at the John Harris Mansion, Harrisburg, PA. With a Spanish coin broken in two in the middle. The coin is a Carolus IIII Dei Gratia. A label on the back identifies the people, with their respective birth and death dates, as Frederick Kelker, Lydia Chamberlin, and Mary their daughter. It also states that it was framed in 1906 by Wm. A. Kelker in Harrisburg. In black velvet matting, and wooden frame. PROVENANCE: Frederick Kelker was the great-grandfather of the consignor. Born in Lebanon, Pennsylvania on October 29, 1780, he learned the hardware business at Oves & Moore in Lebanon. In 1805, he moved to Harrisburg and embarked on the first exclusively hardware business in Harrisburg under the name of F. Kelker & Co., a business that continued in the family until the early 20th century. He married Lydia Genberhing Chamberlin (1786-1812) and they had a daughter Mary who did not survive childhood. Lydia died in 1812 and Frederick subsequently married Catherine Fager. MEASUREMENTS: 14-3/4" x 15-3/4". Overall with frame 20" x 19". CONDITION: Toning to paper of silhouettes. Some chips and dings to frame.
