The creation of "Storm Signals" is documented in extensive hand-written letters between William Goadby Lawrence and Robert W. Selle, who commissioned the painting. The process, which stretched over two years, included thorough research and revision. Lawrence painted several watercolors as studies for the work. Dr. John C.
