oil on canvas, 16 by 13 in.
This World War II scene depicts two people standing before a bombed out building, mourning the loss of a loved one. Shortly after the fighting had stopped LIFE sent artist Ogden Pleissner to Europe to paint the places where Americans had fought before time and the patient work of men had removed all the harsh reminders of battle and before memory had made monuments of the battlefields."
In the May 13, 1946 Life Magazine Pleissner observed, "it would have been much easier for the people to move somewhere else and start to build all over again."
