A contemporary of Eastman Johnson, James Brown was a painter from New York and St. Louis. He is listed in "Who's Who in American Art" as a landscape, marine, genre, and portrait painter. Like Johnson, he exhibited at the American Art Union in 1850 and the National Academy of Design from 1850-1855.
