Hanging Pintail Drake
Cameron T. McIntyre (b. 1968)
New Church, VA, c. 2010
25 in. long
This pintail is an exceptional example from McIntyre's portfolio of painted nature morte carvings. The quality of work places him in the elevated company of early masters Alexander Pope Jr. (1849-1924) and A. Elmer Crowell (1862-1952), who also carved hanging game.
McIntyre's knowledge of this subject is on full display, leaving his knife and rasp tool marks in the wood to great effect. The paint is an excellent complement, with features including extensive combed vermiculation.
The back side of this full body carving is fitted with a heavy screw eye for hanging. It is signed with the maker's incised "CTM."
This exact carving was selected for the front cover of "Hunting and Fishing Collectibles" magazine. Related works are prominently displayed in the Center for American Decoys at the Peoria Riverfront Museum.
Original paint with light wear.
