George Goodwin Kilburne (English, 1839-1924)
The Beaufort Meeting at Frocester, 1904
signed and dated "Goodwin Kilburne 04" lower right
oil on canvas, 23 by 39 in.
George Goodwin Kilburne was born in 1839 in Norfolk, England. He was educated at a school in Kent where his father was the principal before moving to London at the age of fifteen. He was apprenticed to the Dalziel Brothers, the leading wood-engraving firm in Victorian London. Several years after his five-year apprenticeship he married Janet Dalziel, daughter of the painter Robert Dalziel.
About this time, the artist turned to painting. Kilburne traveled extensively throughout Europe studying and painting. Over the course of his career, he was a member of and exhibited with the leading societies of the day, including the Royal Academy, the Royal Institute of Oil Painters, and the Royal Society of British Artists, among others. He lived in Hampstead and Swiss Cottage with his family. His work is in the permanent collections of the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, the Manchester Art Gallery, and the Sheffield Art Gallery, among others.
Kilburne was known for his precision of detail, particularly
in dress. This is evident in The Beaufort at Frocester. Nigel Maidment, the secretary of the Beaufort hunt, notes, “The hunt dress is peculiar to the country in that the Huntsman and Whippers-In wear green and the subscribers a bluecoat with buff facings - the Beaufort Liveries.”
In the painting, dating from 1904, each individual is carefully depicted in his or her precise dress, as befits one of the oldest and most famous hunts in the United Kingdom. The Duke of Beaufort’s Hunt, also known as The Beaufort, dates to 1762 in its pursuit of foxes. It has one of the oldest and largest fox hunting packs in England, with pedigree records going back to 1743.
Frocester is a village in Gloucestershire, about fifteen miles from the Badminton Estate, the seat of the Dukedom of Beaufort. The Beaufort Hunt continues to flourish today, and the kennels continue to win prestigious prizes, including fifty wins at the Peterborough Royal Foxhound Show. The Beaufort at Frocester is an elegant depiction of a prestigious English tradition.
