Frederick Stone Batcheller was born in Providence, Rhode Island in 1837. As a young man, he was apprenticed to a marble cutter at the Tingley Brothers stone yards, though he later focused on painting. Batcheller was a member of "The Group of 1855," an artists' group formed to promote culture and the arts in Providence. As a painter, he was particularly known for his still lives. Batcheller was an active member in artist circles and co-founded the Providence Art Club in 1880. His works can be found in the collections of Brown University, Rhode Island School of Design, and the Providence Art Club, among others.
