Edward C. Storrow was a Boston-based cotton merchant born in Brookline in 1867. He graduated from Harvard in 1889, where he rowed crew and remained active as a coach for several more years. Storrow was a member of the Union Club, the Boston City Club, and the Harvard Clubs of Boston and New York. In 1926 he lent a number of watercolors by Frank W. Benson to the Fogg Museum, where they were displayed and described as "delightful in their feeling for light and air, and in their fresh, clear coloring." Another Benson watercolor from his collection, "Currituck Marshes, North Carolina," is in the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.Frank Benson was an avid outdoorsman and recorded many of his experiences in his paintings. He began actively using watercolor, a portable medium ideal for plein air work, in the early 1920s. During this period Benson frequented Canada's Gaspe Peninsula where he and his friends fished for salmon. Although he painted numerous scenes associated with salmon fishing, Flying Eddy is one of only a few that portrays the actual act of fishing.This work was one of a select group of watercolors included in the 1938 joint exhibition of Boston School artists Frank W.
