Patricia Condon Johnson comments in "The Shape of Things: The Art of Francis Lee Jaques," "Hurtling upward through bare branches in its time-honored fashion, the American woodcock has an almost cult following among shooting sportsmen. The bird is known for its long bill and shoe-button eyes, and its remarkable camouflage feathering which makes it almost invisible to the eye, even from only a few feet away."
