Jackson, MI, c. 1920
One hundred years ago prisoners were "employed" in the prisons of many states. The prison in Jackson, Michigan, opened in 1840 and for the next one hundred years its inmates produced wooden products and furniture. This extensively carved cane exhibits a couple snakes, an alligator, a turtle, a couple dogs, and a carved ball top.
