David Schneuer Ultra-Large Lithograph Entitled Simplizissimus w/ his Signature Social SceneToday, his works are held in the collections of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, the Tel Aviv Museum, the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, and the Spertus Museum in Chicago, among others.David Schneuer was an Israeli painter known for his lively depictions of women and men in nightclubs and bars. His work often alluded to sexuality and erotic subject matter, disguised thorough subtle, fluid lines and a muted colors palette. Schneuer’s work can be compared with the art of the New Objectivity Expressionist painters like Otto Dix and George Grosz, who like him depicted various elements of modern life in the city and nightlife. However, what set the artist apart was his grey-toned color palette and his usage of dark black outlines, a style which drew on the European interest in Japanese printmaking. Born in 1905 in Przemysl, Poland (formerly Austro-Hungary), he grew up during Weimar Republic Germany, traveling between Berlin, Hamburg, and Munich. During his youth, the artist made sign paintings for Jewish shops and stage sets for local theaters. Schneuer was briefly imprisoned in 1932 for artistic dissidence for producing work from a Jewish perspective. After he was released he moved to Tel Aviv and never returned to Europe, narrowly escape the brunt of the Holocaust. Schneuer died on November 1, 1988 in Tel Aviv, Israel.
