In 1946, he joined a group of illegal immigrants to try to enter Israel but was intercepted and detained. At the detention camp in Cyprus, Shmuel spent his time drawing and exhibiting his artwork. After fighting in the War of Independence and settling in Israel in the late-1940s, he returned to art, illustrating a children’s magazine from 1950 to 1953. Subsequently, Katz enrolled at the Ecole Nationale Superieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris, studying fresco, lithography, and etching. Katz made frequent trips to Africa and the Middle East, and his experiences influenced his style and subject matter.
