Rockwell, Norman (American, 1894-1978), Top Hat and Tails, 1976, lithograph in colors, signed and numbered 189/200 in pencil at the bottom, image 27.75 x 23.25 inches, matted and framed 40 x 35.5 inches. Provenance: purchased from Knoedler Gallery in 1976. Originally created by Norman Rockwell in 1923, the litho of Top Hat and Tails was hand proofed and printed by Atelier Ettinger. This title depicts a boy trying on an elegant suit in an old crowded attic. He is admiring his dapper reflection as his canine companion looks at him quizzically. Norman Rockwell loved to add dogs to his paintings. He once said, "If a picture wasn't going very well I'd put a puppy dog in it, always a mongrel, you know, never one of the full bred puppies." This title illustrates an iconic childhood moment when a boy suddenly wants to look like a gentleman.
