"The rich ethnological collections of the Brooklyn Museum had entranced me as a child when I paid them intense & long attendance. It was the works of the Northwest peoples & the Maori that trapped my sharpest notice. I was overwhelmed by the fierce power locked in the totemic forms & of the ornamented power preserved in the Maori carvings. When, one day, at an antiquarian bookfair, I bought a book by a doubtlessly mad English Major-General on the tattooed, severed, and mummified heads of Maori warriors, childish memories mingled with the book's extraordinary images & 'Mokomaki' ensued."
