Rockefeller, John D., Random Reminiscences of Men and Events, 1909, first edition, a wonderful association copy, inscribed on a front blank by Rockefeller to Rev. W. C. Bitting, dated August, 23 1909, on the day of a famous golf match between Rockefeller and the pastor from St. Louis, at the golf course on Rockefeller's Cleveland estate, Forest Hills. The front endpapers are covered with newspaper articles reporting on the match, including two with caricatures of Rockefeller and Bitting on the links. Most of the headlines refer to Rockefeller's test for ministers, "Says golf will show whether they are reliable." Not only did Bitting pass the test, but he beat Rockefeller too. Hardcover, Doubleday and Page, original green cloth, gilt titles. Also includes 3 letters laid-in from members of Bitting's congregation about the match. A rare signature, here with a very interesting provenance: Rev. W. C. Bitting; then by descent through the family; the estate of Barbara Frazer Lowe, Sewickley PA.
