Canvas 24 x 18, in original 24.75 x 18.75 inch wooden strip frame. Painter and graphic artist John Clem Clarke was born in 1937 in Bend, OR. He received a BFA in 1960 from the University of Oregon in Eugene, OR. He has participated in various group exhibitions, including 22 Realists, Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, NY (1970); Look Again, The Taft Museum Cincinnati, OH (1976;) Contemporary American Realism Since 1960, Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, Philadelphia, PA (1981); and Art After Art, Nassau County Museum of Art, Roslyn Harbor, NY (1994). Clarke died in 2021 in Keizer, OR. (bio from Contemporary Arts Center). He was known for his reinterpretations of famous paintings. Using a projector, he broke down images of those paintings into stencils and used sponges or homemade spray-paint cans to paint on a canvas.
