Perrott, Mark (American/Pittsburgh, contemporary), 4 photographs from Tattoo Series: Matt and Penny, Untitled [Man in Harley Davidson Shirt] and two copies of Untitled [Man Smoking Cigar], original photographic prints on photo paper, taken and printed in 1979, unsigned, sheets 14 x 11 inches. Provenance: from the estate of the pioneering tattoo artist, fine artist and sculptor Nick Bubash, Pittsburgh, PA. Prints come housed in original mailing envelope from Perrott to Bubash at his Island Tattoo in McKees Rocks, Pittsburgh, postmarked July 16, 1979. As Perrott writes in the introduction to his 2019 book Tattoo Witness "I made my first portraits in this series at Nick Bubash's Island Avenue Tattoo in 1979, at the beginning of what Nick describes as The Renaissance of Tattoo... I asked Nick if I could come back on the weekend with my camera. He nodded his assent with indifference, but allowed my work to begin without condition. Early the next Saturday, I moved my camera and lights into the back of his Island Avenue Tattoo studio. I made my first portrait of Matt and Penny mid-morning, and continued to photograph way past dark." These are the first prints that Perrott ever made in his Tattoo Series, given to the man who allowed him to shoot inside of his tattoo parlor. A rare and important piece of Pittsburgh and tattooing history.
