Der Nister, aka Pinchus Kahanovich, Mayselekh in Ferzn [Tales in Verse], 1921, enlarged edition, Yiddish text, cover and title page illustrations of goats by Marc Chagall, one of 2500 copies, published in Warsaw by Kultur-Lige, hardcover, original front wrap bound-in, 60 pp., plus table of contents and leaf of ads. Rare book containing 12 tales for children by the famous Yiddish author who went by the name Der Nister. Named one of the 1000 Essential Yiddish Books by the Yiddish Book Center. OCLC locates 8 copies of this edition. This enlarged edition includes the two original stories by Der Nister from the first edition (Vilna, 1917). The image of the goat is a continuous motif in Chagall's art - a symbolic reference to the artist's original family name Tsigel, which is Yiddish for goat. See Israel Museum Catalogue, Tradition and Revolution no. 144 and no. 144 vi and fig. 25 (illustrated). Provenance: Kestenbaum and Co., Jun 23, 2011, Lot 293.
