Shakespeare, William, designed by Bruce Rogers, edited by Herbert Farjeon, The Poetry and Plays of William Shakespeare - complete set in 39 volumes (37 volumes of the plays plus 2 volume of poetry), published 1939-1941, Limited Editions Club, signed by Rogers in the second volume of the poems, each of the play volumes numbered 1559 of 1950 on the colophon, the poetry volumes are 1063 of 1500, hardcover, linen-backed boards, each volume is illustrated by a different artist, including John Austen, Eric Gill, Valenti Angelo, Frans Masereel, Arthur Rackham, Fritz Kredel, Fritz Eichenberg, W. A. Dwiggins and others. Provenance: from the collection of Meyer Robert Guggenheim, an American diplomat and member of the prominent Guggenheim family, with his bookplate affixed to the front pastedown of each book.
Condition
In primarily Fair or Good- condition; former owner's bookplate to front pastedown of each volume; text and illustrations are clean and unmarked, however there are dark areas of discoloration to the edges of the endpapers and occasionally to the margins of a page of text (appears to be from old smoke damage); the front board of volume 2 of the poetry is stained; each book with a slight bend; spines darkened and with some bumping; edges dusty; does not include any slipcases, jackets or prospectuses.
