Cole, Roderick, Portrait of Abraham Lincoln, salt print photograph, printed between 1858 and 1860, with interesting provenance, oval image 7.25 x 5.25 inches, mounted to a backing board with old inscription to verso "(Sent) to Wm. E. Frazer by Abraham Lincoln in 1860." There is a scan of a handwritten letter from William E. Frazer to Abraham Lincoln, dated November 12, 1859, in the online database House Divided: The Civil War Research Engine at Dickinson College (https://hd.housedivided.dickinson.edu/node/25800). At the end of the letter, Frazer writes "PS, If you have a Photograph, Ambrotype, or Lithograph, Likeness of yourself, I would be pleased to hang it up by the Side of our mutual Friend, the Hon Simon Cameron's, it would gratify many of your warm Friends here that have never had the pleasure of seeing you." The database also has a letter from Lincoln to Frazer dated November 1, 1859. Provenance: William E. Frazer; then by descent through the family; the estate of Barbara Frazer Lowe, Sewickley PA.
Condition
Photo has been mounted to a backing board; otherwise in good antique condition, faded, few small stains overall, most noticeable at upper left.
