Artist Bio: Hector Guimard (1867–1942) was a pivotal French architect and designer, celebrated as a leading figure in the Art Nouveau movement. Born in Lyon, France, on March 10, 1867, Guimard pursued his education at the École nationale supérieure des arts décoratifs and later at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. His architectural philosophy was profoundly influenced by the organic forms found in nature, which became a hallmark of his distinctive style.
Guimard’s breakthrough came with the design of the Castel Béranger (1894–1898), an apartment building in Paris that showcased his innovative use of sinuous lines and ornamental details, earning him widespread acclaim. He is perhaps best known for his iconic entrances to the Paris Métro, created between 1900 and 1913, which feature elegant cast iron and glass structures embodying the fluidity and dynamism of Art Nouveau design.
