The Magic Pool will be included in Stephen Good and Phyllis Braff’s forthcoming
Thomas Moran Catalogue Raisonné.
Moran painted
The Magic Pool in the latter half of 1916 while in residence at his East Hampton studio. The trees are characteristic of his Eastern Long Island work while the composition, favored by the artist since the early 1860s can also be viewed in
The Autumnal Woods (1865) and
A Glimpse of Georgica Pond, Long Island (1885). In each painting, a dense canopy in the foreground creates an intimate space through which to view the effects of light and atmosphere happening in the distance. Both
A Glimpse of Georgica Pond, Long Island and
The Magic Pool use small pools of water to reflect light into the dim wooded areas. Similar not only in composition, but season,
The Magic Pool and
The Autumnal Woods share a vibrant palette of contrasting warm and cool tones.
