According to Goodwin biographer Dr. Larry Len Peterson, “Goodwin is well known for his predicament paintings packed with anticipated action and uncertainty. Less known but as powerful are his more reflective pieces where he allows the viewer’s imagination to create its own experience. A Dangerous Moment is one of his finest.
“In this beautiful mountain setting, two canoers are about to have the tranquility of a morning outing abruptly interrupted. Looking anxious, they simultaneously fixate on danger ahead. Is it a startled mother bear protecting her cubs, a trophy elk, or a mountain lion ready to pounce? Perhaps dangerous rapids?
“Although Goodwin didn’t intend it, some savvy advertising agent took the opportunity to insert ‘Packhard Shoe Co.’ on the rock cliff as if to imply they were checking out a business ad. Calendar companies such as Brown & Bigelow in St. Paul, Minnesota, often placed businesses’ names in Goodwin’s paintings as an added enticement for them to buy their calendars. Later, the ads were frequently painted over for future purposes. A Dangerous Moment is one of their most memorable and effective applications.”
