An original bill of sale from John Howell Books dated 1983 will accompany the lot.
According to Dixon biographer Linda Jones Gibbs, “Dixon was only one of many painters during the first half of the 20th century who attempted to capture the unique beauty and spaciousness of the American West. Like Dixon, other artists applied an impressionist technique to the western scene or brought to the subject their own versions of modernism. Although he ultimately developed his own very recognizable style combining forceful composition and rich color, something beyond technique distinguishes his work from the countless other interpretations of the West. I believe Dixon’s mature work is supremely different from that of his contemporaries, most all of whom came from outside the region.
“Dixon did not paint the West from the outside in but rather from the inside out. Dixon got it. He got the West because he knew it, and he knew it because he was born into it, grew up breathing it, exploring its far corners, wrote sonnets to it, let his children run naked in it, and slept under its stars.”
