Western historian Don Hedgpeth wrote, “Howard Terpning can hear the faint echo of drums and the shrill sound of the old songs. He is attuned to the seasonal rhythms of a land and a life that centered on buffalo and horses. He is moved by the defiant dignity in an old one’s eyes, undimmed by time. His paintings come not just from his hand and his eye, but also from his heart. They are a tribute to the traditions of a once-proud people, offered up with enduring aspects of both regret and hope. He has brought back that world where the buffalo run, and the People are still free. Howard Terpning’s medicine is strong, and it is good.”
In discussing this painting the artist writes, “I came upon this scene when I was exploring one of the Montana mountains on horseback with two friends. I recorded the landscape that you see in the painting and added the two Crow warriors and horses to complete the scene. The title seemed to fit. It was one of those moments that I will not forget.”
