Hudson biographer Searles R. Boynton wrote, “Grace Hudson’s style of eliciting response from a viewer is well illustrated in The Runaway. In the painting, Annie Mitchell assumed the duties often demanded of an older sister. Whatever mischief that the little one must have been pursuing when rescued by her sister evidently was of such an enjoyable sort as to provoke the strong disapproval evident in the canvas. Besides arousing curiosity as to the events, the painting illustrated Grace’s superb ability to capture a fleeting moment in time. Such a pose would have been tiring and uncomfortable, even for subjects with more patience.”
