In 1903, Frank Tenney Johnson, with the help of the editor of Field & Stream magazine, began planning a trip to the West which proved pivotal in his career. The following year he was on a cow ranch near Craig, Colorado when he wrote to his wife Vinnie, “On our way back to camp our horses knew where they were going and didn’t need any encouragement. The mosquitos were terrible until we got into the water of Bear River, and weren’t quite as bad when we got into the hills. The daylight faded quickly and then the stars burned brightly in the deepening blue vault of the heaven, which I love so much. It made me think of my darling wife so far away, as I rode along and all the fine paintings I’m going to make about this wonderful country and its wonderful people, when you and I are together again back in a studio in New York.”
