According to Patricia Trenton, PhD, “Edgar Payne created scores of paintings depicting various scenes in America and Europe, notably Sierra Nevada and Alpine mountainscapes that caught his eye, Italian and French marinescapes with boats and fishermen, and Southwest desert scenes populated with distant Native American figures on horseback. Known as ‘an indefatigable worker in his chosen profession,’ he assimilated every bit of knowledge that he acquired from each picture, whether successful or experimental.
“Called the poet-painter of the California Sierra, Payne led a close circle of artistic friends on treks through the indomitable Sierra country, drawing on his pathfinding skills and knowledge of the area to introduce them to new subjects for their brushes.
“In both America and Europe, the remoteness of the mountains attracted him. Perhaps, as Scott A. Shields suggests in his essay, they represented an escape from the turmoil of urban settlements, a respite of solitude and meditation. Perhaps Payne was inspired by the challenge of conquering great heights as a means of proving his virility and technical skills or of capturing unique, sublime, and picturesque views of previously unknown vistas. His first recorded venture into the majestic Sierra country, in 1917, was somewhat early and unusual for an artist in Southern California, reflecting his adventurous, imaginative, and independent spirit. Though he never conquered the reaches of the summits, he viewed his scenes from the heights of valleys just below, setting up campsites with his entourage.”
