Two letters from Marion Couse discussing the painting will accompany the lot.
The artist wrote, “The scene … is laid in Walnut Canyon, about 6 miles from Flagstaff Arizona. In ancient times this canyon was occupied by numerous indians [sic] as indicated by the many ruins of their homes. Walnut Canyon is an ideal location for defence [sic] from marauding enemies there being only one entrance and the houses being built around the circular sides of the canyon about 2 hundred feet from the top of the cliff. At the bottom several hundred feet below is a lake of great beauty. The painting represents an ancient cliff dwelling family making obesence [sic] to the rising sun, the rays of which strike with strong effect on the head & upper part of the body of the chief.”
