In 1880, Russell’s parents gave him a sixteenth year birthday gift of a trip to Montana and it was during that journey that he met a true pioneer in the country named Jake Hoover. According to Harold McCracken the meeting between the two began, “Son, my name’s Jake Hoover … I’m huntin’ and trappin’ up on the South Fork of the Judith …You’d better come back with me when I go. You can stay until you get something better to do.” He learned much about the West from Hoover but, “There was only one phase of that life on South Fork which Kid Russell did not entirely like. Jake loved to hunt. While Charlie thoroughly enjoyed accompanying Hoover on his big-game expeditions, he always had an aversion to killing animals. But he gained invaluable first-hand knowledge by watching so many varieties of large animals in their native haunts, and became familiar with the details of their anatomy.”
