In 1910, Charles M. Russell was commissioned to illustrate a picturesque memoir of the Old West by Carrie Adell Strahorn titled Fifteen Thousand Miles by Stage. In addition to seventeen paintings, Russell completed sixty-eight pen and ink drawings for the book. His reputation as an illustrator was already firmly established and he was eagerly sought after by such leading authors of the day as Owen Wister, Theodore Roosevelt, Bret Harte, and Emerson Hough.
