Bjorn Weckstrom Lapponia "Planetoid Valleys", sterling silver necklace, circa 1978
composed of (14) textured creased square links, measuring approximately 1" x 1" linked together, completed by a hidden clasp forming a 16" necklace, signed W for Weckstrom, marked Lapponia, 925, with two Finnish control marks (925), (crown) and A8 date mark (1978), gross weight 106.39 grams. In 1976 Finnish born jewelry artist/sculpture BJorn Weckstrom was commissioned by George Lucas to design some jewelry for a movie in production. Time constraints led to the choice of a Weckstrom necklace already in production - The Lapponia Line. This necklace became the "Planetoid Valleys" necklace worn by Princess Leia in the final scene of "Star Wars" which premiered in 1977. This necklace from 1978 was one year after the release of the movie. The "Planetoid Valleys" necklace was part of the 2013 NYC Forbes Gallery exhibit of "Out of this World Jewelry in the Space Age"
