Maura Doern Danko holds a BA in Studio Art from Providence College, and an MFA from The American University and has taught in higher education throughout the northeast for many years. She considers teaching integral to her development as a painter. Her art is also influenced by working at the Phillips Collection (Washington DC) while in graduate school.
Maura’s painting is tied to issues of drawing, where the focus is on the responsive experience of seeing and the expressive nature of mark-making. Maura also create projects where she takes the work into a form that somehow becomes embedded into the community – mail art, projects in the landscape, collaborations with animators, etc.
Many works often include various investigations of a personalized feminine identity; these might include approaches with pattern or fabric and combined with invented figurative scenarios. Her work frequently encompasses ideas about family life. She plays with format and space in painting, sometimes dividing the area or conceiving new imaginative spaces. Nothing seems fixed or certain.
Among the many venues her work as been featured are: The Bowery Gallery (NYC), Miss Porter’s School (CT), Washington Studio School (DC), Brew House Project Space 101 and Pittsburgh Center for the Arts (both PA). Maura also presents work in unauthorized ways in public spaces such as nearby parking lots and train platform. Maura Doern Danko is an adjunct professor at Mercy College, Dobbs Ferry in the School of Liberal Arts. She also teaches Drawing and Painting at The New York Institute of Technology. With a long history in higher education, Maura likes to co-mingle the history, practice and theory of art. This provides great resource for her painting.
She lives with her husband of twenty-three years and her teenage daughters in the NY metro area.
