Painted wood, 1979, signed on Recto.
12.25 x 13.25 x 11 in.
Artist's Statement:
I studied painting and lithography at the Academy of Arts in Munich, Germany.
1968 relocated to the Unites States of America.
1973 resumes painting and drawing at my loft in Soho, NYC.
1986 trained myself in welding steel sculptures.
Present I continue to build small and large steel sculptures which have been exhibited, and which are in private and public collections in America and in Europe.
The wall sculpture "C.25”, 1979, is part of a series of wall sculptures made from pieces of lumber left over from converting a grain barn into a residential house, “Pat’s Barn”, in Dutchess County NY, in the 1970s. Building them seems like building toys and playing with them simultaneously.
My ART is influenced by the spirit of the Bauhaus Economy. The right angle in the physical world with its formal quiet and equilibrium, is a reference point towards which I work the finished piece with "simplification of design and refinement of proportions” (Mies van der Rohe). Whereas Bauhaus guides my art - Play creates it. Monumentality is integral to all my sculptures irrespective of actual size.
Art is a Mystery - Shared but Discovered by Oneself.
