Wilbur Niewald was a revered painter with far-reaching influence, once dubbed "the Patriarch of the Kansas City Art World" by Nelson-Atkins Director Julian Zugazagoitia. In 1949, Niewald joined the Kansas City Art Institute's faculty, where he was an instrumental member of the Painting department for 43 years, serving as Chair from 1958 to 1985. As a painter, Niewald esteemed the work of Paul Cezanne over all others, and indeed his stylistic arc reflects that of Cezanne's: beginning with imaginative interpretations and over time developing an increasingly observational approach. Niewald's career honors included appointment as a member of the National Academy of Design, a Lifetime Achievement award from the Charlotte Street Foundation, and a 2006 Guggenheim Memorial Fellowship. Haw Contemporary is currently showing Jubilee 2025, a centennial celebration of the artist and his work.
