John Pine
(English, 1690-1756)
The Tapestry Hangings of the House of Lords, representing the several engagements between the English and Spanish fleets in the memorable year 1588 (plate VIII), published 1739
Copper plate engraving on paper, with hand-coloring
15" x 24"
The folio-sized image of a naval conflict as the Spanish Armada traveled through the English Channel. The image was one of ten originally commissioned as a series of tapestries in 1591. John Pine published engraved reproductions of the tapestries in 1739, which had become iconic imagery in English culture by that time, hanging prominently in the House of Lords. The original tapestries were destroyed in a fire in 1834, leaving Pine's engravings all the more historically vital.
The glazed frame measures 24" x 32 1/2".
The original center fold has been nicely flattened. There are a few stray foxing spots scattered across the sheet. One vertical tear just left of center approximately 1 1/2" in length.

In the case where the item is forfeited the winning bidder will not be compensated in any way. Lots left with Circle after the 16th day from the close of the auction are stored at the buyer’s risk.
