§ Maurice Blond (French/Russian, 1899-1974) Les Toits Roses / Red / Pink Rooftops signed lower right "M Blond" oil on canvas 37 x 45cm (14 x 18in)
Provenance: The Krane Kalman Gallery, London. Other Notes: Maurice Blond was born in Poland to a Russian family as Maurice Blumenkrantz. After his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, he moved to Paris in 1924. For two years, he shared a studio in Montparnasse with his friend Kostia Terechkovitch, whom he had encountered during his travels throughout Germany. Among his close circle of friends were numerous Russian artists living in Paris, including Michel Larionov and his wife Nathalie Gontcharova. In 1930, he went on to work for the Russian magazine, Tsichla, as an art consultant and exhibition organiser. He later volunteered to join the French army and changed his surname to 'Blond'. During the war, he took refuge at a farm in Vaucluse for two years, where he took up painting again. He is one of the most representative painters of the School of Paris, his works being marked with remarkable simplicity. After the war, his oeuvre was greatly promoted by the Parisian art dealer Jacques Spreiregen. In the 1950s, he was widely exhibited in London, Los Angeles and Paris.
Label on the reverse bears the No. 12, the artist's name, title of the work, dimensions and medium. (possibly exhibition label ?) A little dirty; undulation in the rooftops on the left.
