Antique Standard Talking Machine Co. (Chicago) "Standard Model A" tabletop 78 disc player, manufactured circa 1909. Base shows wear/dirt/staining, a small wood chip on tabletop. Wood and wood joins still feel solid. Graphic on front has fading and blemishing in one spot, but overall appears strong. Has the standard issue small outside horn for this model, red trimmed with gold. Horn shows wear, scratches, fading, some missing paint. Gold trim is heavily tarnished. Wind-up crank, tonearm, and mounting backbracket for the horn are intact. Tonearm is heavily tarnished. Wind-up crank is missing part of the handle end.
The best part: IT WORKS!! This was tested, and while full speed accuracy is unknown, the hand crank and drive mechanism still works and played a record! Glorious!
For this particular machine, note that it DOES NOT play conventional 78's, due to an oversize 1/4" spindle; rather, Standard Disc Records from Standard Talking Machine Co., a rival to Edison, were compatible and roughly as common in that era. Gem of a find!
